care and cleaning

this dishwasher came with a house we bought 11 years ago. Recently it has been leaving a rather thick soapy film on the dishes and never seems to get them really clean. Dishes MUST be prewashed before washing in the dishwasher which seems redundant. Figuring it was just old and on its way out, we starting shopping for a new dishwasher. We found that on the new ones, there is a screen that has to be removed and rinsed to keep it running effectively. We are trying to figure out if that is the issue with this one before we buy a new one. If so, it has not been done for over 11 years so I am sure it is in need of cleaning!! LOL
