Dishwaher Cleaning

We seem to have a white creamy slime build-up inside of our dishwasher. It's a build-up that is on the fins and all internal pieces. Some of it is like a calcium build-up that we are scraping off with a putty knife. We have disassembled the dishwaher around the drain to clean. What do we do to ensure this does not happen again?
