dryer shuts down after running for 15 or so min then restarts a min or so later only to repeat
i have owned this unit for about 10 years and it has performed flawlessly up until this point. dryer shuts down after running for 15 or so min then restarts a min or so later only to repeat. i checked the exhaust for blockace and the lint filter and visible areas. i check the air intake areas for blockage as well as the air intake on the back of the drum. i did finds a plastic grocery bag melted to the back of the drum and was able to peel it off. unfortunately that did not fix my problem but i believe that it may have been the initial issue and led to a secondary issue such as an over temp tc that got too hot and no longer functions correctly. im looking for a guide to show me the proper steps to disassemble the unit and if the symptoms im seeing could be caused by a out of cal or position over temp sensor.

this has been a good dryer
I have had this GE dryer for many years (13ish) and it has been a very good dryer. The house was struck by lightning about 10 years ago and it fried the on/off switch, but the dryer still works. I had to replace a couple of bushings that the drum rides on a few years ago to stop a squeaking sound. That's pretty much the only thing I've ever had to do to this dryer. The only reason I'm here now is I'm looking for how to take the front cover off (I've done it before to replace the bushings, but I can't remember how) so that I can clean lint out of the machine. It is not drying as well as it used to, and I'm pretty sure that lint-build-up is the problem.

Calculate Dryer Drum capacity
This is a geometric method to calculate drum capacity based on the cylinder volume formula. Unfortunately, the value could be as much as 25% off from the manufacturer stated capacity.
Why? Because a drum is not exactly a cylinder. The edge where bottom connected to the wall is not at 90 degree angle but smooth and rounded. The end of the drum is not clearly marked and the back is not always flat. Finally, there are baffles inside the drum used for tumbling clothes.
This method can be used as a crude estimate but we do not recommend using it for comparisson when shopping for a new dryer.
To determine your dryer drum capacity please take two simple measurements:
1. Use the ruler to measure the depth of the drum (indicated by the red line on the diagram)
2. Now find the distance accross the drum, the diameter (the green line on the diagram). Do not confuse the size of the the door opening with the size of the drum. In this case make the measurements INSIDE the drum.
